Things to Do in the Great Smoky Mountains

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is ideal for the outdoors enthusiast or cynic alike.  Those seeking extreme adventures can enjoy strenuous backcountry hikes, whitewater rafting and mountain biking.  Those not so adventurous will love a stroll through the many 'quiet walkways' along the Gatlinburg bypass, an afternoon picnic, or a relaxing river tubing float.  There is definitely something for everyone....and below are a few more things you might not have thought of.

Make your visit to the park truly memorable for your 5-12 year olds.  While at Sugarlands, pick up the Junior Ranger booklet and when kids complete the activities, return to the visitor center to speak with a Ranger.  They will receive a Jr. Ranger Badge!  Ranger-guided programs are also available for all ages.

Plan a Picnic!
If hiking isn't your forte, plan to enjoy the national park from one of many picnic areas.  A favorite spot is the Chimneys, located next to a rushing river and featuring picnic tables, grills, and public restrooms.  You can easily spend an entire afternoon here lying on a huge boulder enjoying the sun or relaxing with a good book.

Herbert Holt Park near Cooters features a picnic pavilion, walk trail, playground and public restrooms.    Kids under 12 can fish here for free!  Mynatt Park features a picnic pavilion, grills, baseball field, tennis and basketball courts, and plenty of open grounds.  Kids under 12 can fish here for free!  Mills Park offers a picnic pavilion, playground, basketball court, and open fields.  All three parks offer pavilion rental through the Gatlinburg Community Center at 865.436.4990.
